Growing up in Nashville, The New Respects’ Alexis Fitzgerald said that being involved with music was “kind of inevitable.” Especially after her sister and cousin penned a tune, and people liked it. They sort of guessed it was a sign and started the band the next day. That was five years ago. And while Alexis admits that this band couldn’t have made it far if they’d started in their younger years, they’re a close knit, mature group now and making it work. Plus she noted that if the band didn’t make it, “We’d still have to deal with each other for the rest of our lives because we’re family.”
It’s that solidarity that keeps them grounded, but a rock sound that keeps The New Respects going. Now find out the story behind their latest, what’s to come and more…
Kendra: Growing up with gospel roots, did you ever think that’d be the musical path you took?
Alexis: Not at all. We didn’t even think we’d be in a band so it’s all a surprise to us.
Kendra: You definitely let it inspire you. Especially in your single, “Trouble.” What I want to know is what’s one thing you hope stops causing you trouble this year?
Alexis: I’d like to see the trouble between different races and people disappear.
Kendra: Really though, what was the inspiration behind that one?
Alexis: “Trouble” was just a cool rock ‘n roll tune. Zandy had a riff that she was diggin, threw some “angsty” lyrics on top and we all thought it was awesome. As we got older it became more real to us.
Kendra: Now it’s time to play a little game called “tour, duet, cover.” So you have to pick who you’d want to tour with, duet with and then cover out of Aretha Franklin, Alabama Shakes, and John Mayer.
Alexis: Dang that’s tough! Tour – Aretha Franklin. She’s a freakin legend. Duet – Alabama Shakes. A full band duet could be epic or really not, but we like a challenge. Cover – Mayer.
Kendra: Speaking of, any word on a tour coming up in the new year?
Alexis: Nothing we can talk about yet. Still working out details.
Kendra: Any other plans for you guys in 2017 so far?
Alexis: We’re starting the year off right with new music. Our next single “Money” is coming out January 13th and we’re gonna hit the road and play a bunch of shows. Beyond that, who knows, anything could happen. 2016 was an awesome year for us and I’ve got a good feeling about next year.
Kendra: If you had to make a mixtape for a family gather, what five songs would have to be on it?
