GML: Straight Outta…

Like the rest of the world, I spent last weekend watching Straight Outta Compton. Being that I’m as into rap as I am into algebra, I went in knowing less than the basics – knowing that when Eazy-E got diagnosed, it was almost going to be over and I’d be free to use the restroom. Is it as great as everyone is making it out to be? Yes. The music came in second to the race relations – at least for me. It’s weird and sad to think that some things may never change. What I wanted to point out this week though is whether or not this movie will get any recognition when awards season rolls around. Yes, it’s not music based news and more movies – but it’s something I’ve been thinking of.

The three men who play Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E were phenomenal, but will the Academy even notice? It’s not like rap music hasn’t broken into that scene before. Both Eminem and Three 6 Mafia both have Oscars – BUT it’s for their musical contributions to film. Already this year I’ve heard some buzz  about Johnny Depp in Black Mass and when you think of it, isn’t that hypocritical? He’s playing a real life criminal who in reality is serving time for murder. Depp may win his first Oscar for this one, while the men playing gangster rappers who did have some run ins with the law – but nothing like murder. This isn’t to downplay Depp at all. I think that movie looks amazing, but it’s just some food for thought. Mafia movies are always accepted but when it comes to the reality of black neighborhoods – they’re left off to the side.

Note, in 1992 Boyz n the Hood was nominated for Best Picture, but what won? Silence of the Lambs. Killers like Hannibal Lecter exist, but it’s interesting that the Academy would rather praise a twisted white killer instead of a movie that showcased the reality of so many young men and women in LA.

Think about that and let me know your thoughts on the matter – in the mean time, check out these video picks for the week. Some familiar faces to Golden Mixtape like Motion City Soundtrack and Brick + Mortar, as well as some new kids on the block and a little snow to aid in this summer heat.
