There’s something about the world of science fiction that I am both equally repulsed by and drawn to. The idea of space is so vast, which makes room for the best entertainment and the worst. (I won’t say which is which! That’s for another blog entirely.) I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that everyone has at least one favorite alien, spaceman…what have you, because when you think about it – the idea of something bigger and beyond us, is terrifying…but also considerably intriguing.
For Melbourne band Up and Atom‘s guitarist, Marcus, science and space has been a heavy influence on him both creatively and personally. From the band’s name alone, it’s easy to gather that geekdom lives within each member. Having recently visited Australia’s Comic Con, I asked a few questions that progress mostly into, you guessed it, The Next Generation.

Back in 1999 you could find me waiting for the school day to be over so I could hurry home to squeal at acts like Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears on TRL. Sadly that afternoon delight is long gone and I’m an adult now (at least according to numerical age), but that doesn’t mean the teeny bopper in me is dead. I can still admit when the next Teen Beat poster boy is on the rise. So if you haven’t been introduced to The After Party yet, here you go…They have a new EP Kansas and if they aren’t your new favorite band, they’re definitely pegged to be your next guilty pleasure.
If you’re looking to get hooked instantly, skip “Better Me” and “Here Comes the Rain” and head straight for the other tracks. Those two are good, but not ones to get you wrapped up in boy band goodness. Wait, so this is a boy band? Well they’re young lads in a band, but they play instruments with sweet hooks…so yeah? Think less 98 Degrees and more Jonas Brothers…Wait, they aren’t cool anymore, right? Okay, they’re like a more poppy version of The Cab.
Speaking of, their Cab similarity shines in the blue eyed soul of the sweet love ditty “Still Got Love” and “Unforgettable Nights.” With “She’s Gotta Boyfriend” you’re sitting there thinking that maybe Cobra Starship spawned a baby band and left them to fend for their selves. No worries Gabe Saporta, they’re doing just fine.
So where’s the addiction come in? If the three mentioned above don’t suck you in…”Waste the Day” will. Lyrically it’s cute and made me think of Plain White T’s (“Lazy Day Afternoon”) and Bruno Mars (“The Lazy Song”). Any song that’s about not doing much, is worth the time to sing along to. But musically it’s got One Direction written all over it. It’s fun and so sugary it might cause diabetes.
The After Party is a new generation boy band. They might write cutesy tracks about the ladies, but they’re so damn fun to sing…You might hate yourself later for enjoying their sound. Oh well, we all need a pop fix. So steal some of their lovey dovey lyrics for a Facebook status and hope your crush likes it, and pick of their EP Kansas, out now.
And make sure to see them if you can when they step out on the road with Hollywood Ending, Sandlot Heroes and Almost Hero in late August.

As of Friday my contract job turned into a game of purgatory…Not hired, not fired…We’ll see how that pans out. So as I sit here trying not to leave the confines of these four walls so I don’t spend money I don’t have, I listen to Forever Came Calling’s Contender.
On my first day of unemployment FCC is calming my nerves by building up my adrenaline with wild and rapid songs like “If Bukowski Could See Me Now” and “For The Wolves.” When I checked this band out live opening for Las Vegas’ Last Call, I was on the fence about their sound. They weren’t bad, just weren’t for me. The seemed a bit too far on the punk side of the “pop punk” label, but Contender has made me rethink my primary decision about them.
“Front Porch Sunrise” has a strong opening that leads you to a string of lyrics delivered through hostility. Then “Dead Poets Honor” says “fall asleep on the streets of the cities you love” …I don’t want to be homeless, but I like the sentiment. However, if you’re looking for the track to sink your teeth into…Look nowhere else but “I’ll Be Better I Promise.” If Contender were porn, this song would be the money shot. It’s got that duo dynamic you’ll find in bands like Man Overboard, where one side is sensitive and the other gives it to you hard. Wait…we still on the porn thing?
Forever Came Calling’s Contender is out now and if you’re into bands like State Champs and The American Scene, then this album is just another one to add to your palette. And if you’re one of those people who need to see the music live before you but the album…Check them out now on the road with With The Punches, or Yucaipa, CA with Last Call August 17th. Hell, I might go…I don’t have a jump tying me down…
