Your mom and dad will go on and on about the music of their time and how it was better and one day you will do the same with your children, but what do you do when an artist from your time tosses things back old school? You and your parents are left agreeing to disagree because that’s what Misty Gonzales and her Rock & Roll Freedom Show have done.
Rock with a gritty 70’s infused style and Misty’s high power vocals leaves you wondering what decade you’re sitting in. If I grab the paper with Vietnam headlines flood the cover? That’s what I was left imagining as “Love is War” escaped my laptop on a weekend afternoon and spoke of “grenade’s exploding.” But rest assured I was in 2011 and sitting in a war free zone, with only Misty and her hippy vibes leaving me yearning for the Venice sun due to “Have You Ever Been Here Before.”
Rock & Roll Freedom Show is a nice refresher course in music that once was and how it can be brought into the 21st century. But it wasn’t all from back then; one could even compare Misty’s style to a young Sheryl Crow, before she dated the bicyclist and went off the pop end. So if you’re tired of women in rock who just parade around to bubblegum beats with guitar and call themselves “rock,” check out Misty Gonzales and her Rock & Roll Freedom Show, out now.
